The entity will provide its support for the eighteenth edition of the premier basketball tournament in El Salvador.
El Salvador.- In a press conference, Yamil Bukele, Honorary President of the National Institute of Sports (INDES) and the Salvadoran Basketball Federation (FESABAL), presented the details of the 2024 Closing Tournament of the Tigo Sport Cup. During the event, it was highlighted that the National Lottery of Beneficence of El Salvador (LNB) became the new sponsor of the tournament. The season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in the history of the Major Basketball League (LMB).
«At the Lottery, we are proud and feel a great responsibility in supporting this tournament, which not only serves as a showcase for local talent, but also as a crucial platform for the training and development of our athletes. Basketball, like all sports, has the power to transform lives and reflect the values we want to promote in our society, such as teamwork, perseverance, and personal improvement,» the entity explained in a statement.
Javier Milián, president of the LNB, shared his enthusiasm: “The path to success is full of challenges, but each obstacle you overcome will bring you one step closer to your goals. I encourage you to make every game, every training session, and every moment on the court an opportunity to grow, learn, and give your best. The 2024 Closing Tournament will start today, Thursday, August 29, with the opening match between Metapán and Santa Ana. This first encounter will mark the beginning of a competition in which ten teams will fight to win the title.

Since its inception in 2015, the Salvadoran Basketball Federation has organized a total of 17 tournaments, with Santa Tecla BC being the most successful team with five titles, followed by Metapán with two consecutive championships.

The Philippines.- Senate deputy minority leader Risa Hontiveros has told media that Alice Guo, the suspended mayor of Bamban, Tarlac, revealed the name of a key figure linked to illegal offshore gaming operators during a closed-door session. She did not make the name public but said the information provided by Guo corroborates a theory the committee has been working on for the past month.
Some Philippine media are suggesting that the unnamed figure could be former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Benjamin Acorda. A photograph has emerged showing Acorda with Tony Yang, an alleged associate of Guo and the owner of Phil-Sanjia, a company that is being investigated for alleged ties with offshore gaming operators. Acorda was PNP chief when the Zun Yuan Technology in Bamban was raided in March. He was forced to resign at the end of that month.
Acorda has denied the claim, telling reporters: “We can say that we are clean with Alice Guo. We don’t have anything to do with her escape. I also do not accept money from her.”
Regarding the pictures, he said: “If ever they came to me or I could help and whatever needed to be discussed, it was always legal. That’s all I can say.”
