Lusia Barseghyan. A trusted leader, recognized for her forward-thinking approach and dedication to operational excellence

With over 16 years of experience in the iGaming industry, Lusia Barseghyan had the opportunity to contribute to the launch and growth of products across online poker, casinos, and sports betting in both B2B and B2C sectors. Specializing in product development, team leadership, and business strategy, she worked alongside talented teams to help bring innovative ideas to life, some of which have been recognized with award nominations.

Her key strengths lie in working with cross-functional teams, implementing growth strategies, and identifying opportunities for new revenue streams. She focused on maintaining operational efficiency and fostering collaboration and aims to contribute positively to the continued success of the iGaming industry.

HER STARTING IN THE INDUSTRY AND HER DEVELOPMENT AS A LEADER

Lusia remembers her first steps in the sector by saying: “That’s quite an amusing story! I received a request from a local gaming company seeking assistance with obtaining their license. At the time, I was working as a university lecturer and an analyst at a social-political surveys center, so it was a completely different environment for me!”

She also recalls her interest in the gaming industry began after participating in her first poker tournament. “I view games purely from an operational standpoint. This experience broadened my understanding of the gaming industry and ignited a desire to delve deeper into it, with the aim of creating a safer and more innovative environment for players and B2B projects,” she explains.

What initially attracted her to the gaming industry was the dynamic nature of the sector and its potential for innovation. She found the intersection of technology, strategy, and player engagement fascinating. In this sense, she admits: “My decision to devote myself to the industry came from a desire to contribute to its evolution. I wanted to be part of a movement that prioritizes safety and integrity while fostering an engaging environment for players. I believe in gaming’s transformative power and its potential to create positive experiences, and I want to play a role in shaping that future.”

That beginning was the kick-off to a successful career that led her to leadership in a large company. Before her appointment as COO of Oddsgate in August 2024, she was the Director of Gaming Operations from March 2023. In this role, she played a pivotal part in managing key business relationships and establishing clear KPIs to enhance performance across both individual and departmental levels, ensuring that Oddsgate continuously improves its internal operations, strengthens team collaboration, and consistently delivers projects on time also providing clients with exceptional service 24/7. Her dedication to operational excellence has been vital in driving the company’s success and solidifying Oddsgate’s reputation as a dynamic and innovative player in the gaming industry.

AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL WOMEN

She considers the industry has traditionally been male dominated, so she has dedicated to creating an inclusive environment for women in gaming. “Discussing the role of women and minorities in the gaming and iGaming industry is very often complex and deeply personal for me as for many other women, particularly as it often intersects with sensitive experiences throughout one’s career. While we have seen positive progress in terms of representation at higher levels, the reality remains that achieving true equality and diversity is an ongoing challenge,” she states.

At this point, Barseghyan believes it’s essential to recognize that attaining a C-Level position may indicate a certain point of success. Still, it does not ensure equality or diversity within the workplace or the industry. However, she says, it’s important to emphasize that being a woman shouldn’t be the sole criterion for hiring or promotion. Professionalism and merit should always be the guiding factors in these decisions. That’s why she is optimistic that there will be a more balanced representation in the industry, where opportunities are based on talent and capability rather than gender. By fostering an environment that values diversity while maintaining high standards of professionalism, it is possible to create a more equitable future for everyone in the sector.

About her recommendations to a young woman who is starting in this industry, she emphasizes: “Never and under no circumstances do not compromise your dreams. Not when you doubt yourself nor when people do not believe in you. Establish clear boundaries, foster healthy and professional communication, and visualize the person you aspire to be. You matter, you are important, and you have the potential to achieve far more than you can envision!”

ON LEADERSHIP AND INSPIRING OTHERS

When asked about how she would describe herself as a professional, she responds she prefers to focus on her management style. She thinks her approach has been instrumental in achieving success stories within this industry.

Regarding leadership, she defines: “Leadership isn’t management. This is the big one. Leadership and management are not synonymous. Managers manage things. Leaders lead people. Leadership has nothing to do with seniority or one’s position in a company’s hierarchy. Leadership doesn’t automatically happen when you reach a specific pay grade. Hopefully, you find it there, but there are no guarantees.”

Lusia mentions that, in all of her talks, she stresses the fact that you don’t need a title to lead. In fact, you can be a leader in your place of worship, your neighborhood, in your family, all without having a title. She doesn’t believe that those with charisma automatically lead. This executive identifies several key components that have helped her navigate the various ups and downs of her projects more easily. “For me, leadership has always been the process of influencing and inspiring others to achieve a common goal or vision. I am always trying to continuously learn and develop, leaving a positive impact and legacy by promoting a culture of innovation and accountability currently within Oddsgate,” she clarifies.

Besides, she expresses: “The first value of the Agile Manifesto, ‘Individuals and Interactions Over Processes and Tools’ is a principle I strive to adhere to closely in my management approach. Your team is your superpower. Mutual respect is the most important bridge.”

PERSONAL LIFE vs PROFESSIONAL CAREER

In relation to the work-life balance, this leader accepts she struggles to find that equilibrium between personal life and work. The only ritual she has kept for many years is waking up very early.

Moreover, she declares: “The industry I’ve chosen, particularly in executive positions, often makes this balance challenging to attain. Operations play a critical role in any project within the gambling industry, especially when entering regulated markets. Addressing the various challenges requires careful strategic planning and a high degree of adaptability in an increasingly competitive landscape. This approach ensures that organizations can effectively navigate complexities and maintain a strong position in the market.”

For her, family time is all about quality over quantity. No matter how busy she is, she strives to be genuinely present and involved with her family. She prefers quiet evenings at home with books and movies rather than noisy parties or night outs.

ENJOYING HER PASSIONS

Apart from her job, Lusia has a range of passions and interests that keep her balanced and inspired. She enjoys exploring various forms of art and visiting galleries. Traveling is an integral part of her life, and it truly excites her as it allows her to experience different cultures and perspectives. Music is almost always with her when she is not in the meetings or calls, providing a constant source of inspiration.

Tennis and Latin dancing are also two of her hobbies that provide both enjoyment and inspiration. Playing tennis keeps her active and energized, allowing her to engage in friendly competition while improving her skills. Latin dancing, on the other hand, offers a vibrant way to express herself and connect with others through rhythm and movement. Currently, she finds herself with limited time for hobbies, and she’s had to miss many of her training sessions. In this sense, she hopes she can return to a more balanced routine once the company successfully navigates the challenging regulatory adaptations.

PROSPECTS AND ASPIRATIONS

Considering the primary market in which Oddsgate operates, particularly Brazil, significant attention is being paid to adapting to and navigating the new regulatory landscape. This evolving environment presents both challenges and opportunities for growth.

As the company aligns its strategies to meet these regulations, it will focus on ensuring compliance while continuing to innovate and enhance its offerings. By embracing these changes, the provider aims to solidify its position as a leader in the Brazilian gaming market, bringing exceptional value to its customers and stakeholders alike.

On her goals and aspirations, Barseghyan shares: “Professionally, I aspire to enhance my leadership skills while creating a collaborative environment that empowers my team to thrive. I want to encourage them to excel and explore new possibilities, pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve together. On a personal level, I plan to devote more time to my passions, including traveling, photography, and music. Striking a balance between work and personal interests is vital for nurturing creativity and overall well-being. As I face the challenges ahead, I aim to stay committed to continuous learning and to inspire those around me, particularly women in the industry, to pursue their dreams and leave their mark.”

A drink: I’m not much of a drinker. Typically, I choose something light and refreshing, like the Mai Tai and Daiquiri. During my recent travels to Brazil, I discovered and liked Caipirinha.

A sport: To play: tennis. To watch: tennis and football.

A teacher, mentor or main reference in your life: Can’t choose one. Various mentors have offered invaluable guidance throughout my academic journey and professional career.
