The historic Freehold Raceway, a center for harness racing in New Jersey for more than a century, is set to close at the end of the year after a sudden announcement last month.

Now, the industry group that represents horsemen in the state’s harness racing world is warning that the closure will cost them a significant amount of money — and they’re going to court to fight back.

That sudden announcement, and this new lawsuit, sheds light on how the legalization of sports betting has impacted horse racing in New Jersey – and claims that Freehold Raceway’s owners broke state laws in order to keep the horsemen from getting their cut of sports betting revenue.
