Spain.- The Government Council of Cantabria approved a five-year extension of the suspension for the granting of licenses for the operation of type B1 and B5 gaming machines. The measure will remain in effect until at least 2029 and includes prize gaming machines installed in bars, cafés, restaurants, and gaming halls.
The extension will come into effect starting October 31, the date on which the current regulation expires. With this decision, Cantabria restricts the granting of new licenses, a policy that has been maintained for almost two decades.
In July, the Gaming Commission of Cantabria unanimously supported the legality of gaming establishments in Santander and endorsed the opening of a new venue, emphasizing the rigorous compliance with the regional law for the granting of provisional permits.
In this regard, there has been a call to act responsibly to avoid causing social alarm on a sensitive issue, where protective measures have been implemented towards the most vulnerable groups.

During the ordinary meeting of the commission, the need to coordinate efforts was also highlighted, which was reflected in the meeting of the Technical Council for monitoring the Gaming Law. Additionally, the implementation of a new protocol to improve public response to the detection of minors in gaming venues was announced, as well as an increase in inspections of establishments and gaming machines.
