Executive Decree 421 signed by Daniel Noboa nullifies the prohibition imposed by former president Guillermo Lasso Mendoza.
Ecuador.- The Ecuadorian government led by Daniel Noboa signed the Executive Decree 421, which amends the regulation of the Communication Law. Among the main measures, it was arranged that within 60 days the process of awarding frequencies of the radioelectric spectrum in Ecuador should begin.
Moreover, among the modifications, a reform to the regulation of the Organic Law of Communication made by former president Guillermo Lasso Mendoza was published, and in one of its articles, a phrase related to advertising on gambling was removed. Thus, from now on, the dissemination of advertising in media on the system of betting or sports predictions will be authorized, as the decree amended the text of the law.
The previous regulation included the prohibition of "misleading advertising, as well as all types of advertising or propaganda of child pornography, cigarettes, substances subject to control, and all types of betting or sports prediction systems".

The modification made by the Government of Noboa removed the phrase “all types of betting or sports prediction systems”, opening the door for companies in the sector to begin advertising in the Ecuadorian media as they do in other Latin American countries.
In statements to the local media El Universo, the director of the non-governmental organization Fundamedios, César Ricaurte, explained that with this provision it “leaves open the possibility that the media can have financing from sports betting companies, which are the main advertisers and have a huge advertising presence in football matches and on the internet”.
