According to the Khmer Times, since 2022, the Indian Embassy in Cambodia has collaborated with local police to rescue over 1,000 Indians from scam operations, with nearly 800 rescued in the first three quarters of 2024 alone.
Previously, the Khmer Times reported that the Indian Embassy emphasized an increase in the number of Indian citizens falling prey to high-paying job scams, with about 770 Indian citizens rescued this year alone.
The report states that since 2022, there has been an increase in scam activities in Southeast Asian countries like Cambodia. In response, the Indian Embassy in Cambodia has been working with Cambodian police to rescue victims.
The Indian Embassy also highlighted that the Cambodian police have been actively cooperating with the embassy to rescue Indian victims and repatriate them.
"Whenever the embassy requests a rescue, the Cambodian police respond actively. Additionally, the Cambodian police have set up a hotline to facilitate calls for help from victims or their families," the embassy stated.
However, the Indian Embassy noted that the exact number of Indian citizens trapped in Cambodian scam operations is still unclear.
With an increase in such cases, the Indian Embassy in Cambodia has repeatedly issued warnings, advising Indian citizens seeking employment in Cambodia not to be deceived. They are cautioned against engaging in any activities that violate Cambodian laws and are reminded to contact the embassy and Cambodian helplines if they encounter problems.
In the latest incident, seven Indians sought refuge at the Indian Embassy to avoid pursuit by a Cambodian scam group and have now been repatriated.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, Dusuka, stated that the Cambodian government is willing to cooperate with all foreign embassies in Cambodia to ensure the safety of all foreign nationals.
"In cases involving foreigners, we will strictly follow immigration law," he said.
