UKGC Reports 11% GGY Boost Amid Record High Slot Revenue

The latest market overview published by the UK Gambling Commission has reported a gross gambling yield (GGY) of £1.32 billion ($1.71 billion) in the three months to 30 September.

The increase was primarily triggered by a recorded 16% uptick in online slot activity among UK gamblers, which propelled slot revenue to a record high.

Over 25 Billion Bets or Spins

The UKGC collected online gambling data from the largest online operators covering the period starting March 2020 to September 2024.

The data showed a notable rise in GGY from July to September 2024, with the total online GGY increasing 11% YoY

During the same period, the total number of bets or spins reached a record-breaking 25.2 billion, the largest figure recorded in a quarter since the collection of data was initiated.

The figure marked a 12% increase over last year, while average monthly active accounts grew by 8%.

It’s worth noting that this dataset may include free bets and bonuses and isn’t comparable to the industry-wide statistics as it doesn’t cover all operators.

Online Wagering Revenue Up, Number of Bets Down

Online real event betting GGY rose 6% YoY, reaching £453 million ($587 million), despite a 10% drop in the number of bets

Moreover, the average monthly active accounts grew by 9% compared to the same period last year.

13% More Slots Spins

Slots spins increased 13% in the quarter, hitting a new peak of 23.3 billion, while the number of average monthly active accounts rose by 16% to 4.4 million

Despite the number of spins per session going down from 147 to 142, and GGY per session dropped slightly from £4.20 ($5.45) to £4.13 ($5.36), one operator’s reclassification of products into the slots category contributed to this record-high GGY data for slots.

Moreover, the number of online slots sessions lasting over an hour rose 9% YoY to 10 million, while total sessions climbed 18% to 164.7 million, the highest in the dataset.

Sessions over one hour represented about 6.1% of all play, a slight decrease from 6.6% in the same quarter last year. The average session length held steady at 17 minutes.

Customer interactions rose 1% to 3 million, with most remaining automated. Direct interactions by operators saw a slight 1% YoY decrease.

Additional Data

Between July and September, offline betting GGY fell 1% YoY to £533 million ($689 million), with total bets and spins dipping 0.1% to 3.1 billion.

Over-the-counter bets dropped 6% to 134 million, while GGY decreased 8% to £152 million ($196 million).

Bets via self-service betting terminals went up 9% to 34 million, with GGY up 8% to £101 million ($130 million).

Machines GGY saw a slight 0.2% increase to £281 million ($363 million), with an average session spend of £12.35 ($15.97), up 2%

The average number of spins per session grew by two to 130.

Machine sessions over one hour remained stable at 2% compared to last year.
