The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) investigating alleged manipulations of games and sports betting once again reaches the Brazilian National Team. Last Tuesday (12), the Senate approved an invitation for Botafogo's forward, Luiz Henrique, to testify before the commission. There is not yet a date for when the player will be heard by the parliamentarians, but inplayBet is ahead and analyzes the issue, in an article for GMB.
Botafogo's forward Luiz Henrique, called up to represent Brazil in this FIFA Date, is investigated for bets made while playing at Real Betis (Spain). The transactions, about R$ 40,000, are linked to the player Lucas Paquetá, also investigated for involvement in betting schemes.
Almost a month ago, right after Botafogo's 5-0 victory over Peñarol in the Libertadores, Luiz Henrique briefly spoke about the matter in an interview with journalists in the mixed zone post-game.
“They want to dim my shine, but they will not succeed. God is with me, my family is with me, none of this happened,” said the forward.
It is important to note that this is a summons, meaning Luiz Henrique cannot refuse to testify. If he does, the senators may even request the use of police force to ensure the hearing is indeed held.
According to the requirements presented by the senators, the suspicious bets were made at the beginning of 2023, when he was playing in Spanish football. The transactions originated from relatives of another player from the national team investigated by the “CPI of bets”: Lucas Paquetá.
Paquetá, in fact, was denounced by the Football Association of England (FA) on suspicion of involvement in a sports betting scheme in the team he plays for, West Ham. Despite denying the accusations, he was temporarily excluded from the call-ups by then-coach Fernando Diniz. The midfielder will soon be heard, in early December, by the Commission.
Bruno Henrique is also a target of the CPI
Senators Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) and Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) invited the forward Bruno Henrique, from Flamengo, to testify. Recently, the player was the target of a Federal Police operation investigating his expulsion in a match for the rubro-negro. Unlike Luiz Henrique, Bruno was invited to testify. Therefore, he has the right to accept or decline the invitation.
Next steps of the CPI
Other people will also soon be heard by the Commission in the Senate. Among them is the referee Jean Pierre Gonçalves Lima, suspended for 15 months by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) after a controversial play in the match between Athletico-PR and Palmeiras, valid for the 2023 Brasileirão.
The businessman Willian Rogatto, known as the “King of Relegation”, is another name summoned to provide clarification in the CPI. He was arrested by Interpol last Friday (8) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Regulation of bets
In October of this year, the Ministry of Finance updated the list of iGaming companies authorized to operate legally in Brazil. There are 93 betting houses in total, and inplayBet, a reference in the market as one of the fastest-growing bets, is up to date with the Federal Government.
