The National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) agrees with the concern expressed by the president of Anatel, Carlos Baigorri, about the inefficacy of blocking illegal betting sites. Such a scenario may jeopardize the regulation of the Brazilian market, and compromises the effective separation between the "wheat and the chaff". ANJL sees an alarming scenario of proliferation of these platforms due to the absence of effective measures for their takedown.
In discussions with market operators in recent days, ANJL has learned that currently more than two thousand illegal domains are fully operational in Brazil, in addition to the thousands that have already been taken down by Anatel, by order of the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA), of the Ministry of Finance.
Not surprisingly, in a recent interview, the president of Anatel stated that the country is "mopping up ice" in relation to the blocking of illegal bets, since the regulatory agency, alone, does not have the means for effective and permanent takedown of these sites.
"We recognize the diligence and seriousness of the work being carried out by the Ministry of Finance, as well as the efforts of Anatel for the blockings. But the industry needs an effective response. The serious and legalized houses will not be able to withstand the competition from illegal sites", evaluates the president of ANJL, Plínio Lemos Jorge.
"It is necessary to separate the wheat from the chaff, and this will only be achieved with the hard fight against illegal sites, which have harmed society and tarnished the image and reputation of legal bets", he says.
ANJL highlights that the industry's greatest concern is with the effectiveness of the regulation of the Brazilian market, whose start is scheduled for January 1st.
The operation of illegal sites – which make misleading advertisements, do not collect taxes, and do not provide any support or security for bettors – brings with it the dangerous potential to weaken the entire regulated environment and position Brazil as a pariah in the global betting market.
Launched in March 2023, the National Association of Games and Lotteries defends the interests of its members, the sector, and responsible and integral gaming, always guided by the encouragement of sports, the safety of bets, and the contribution to the economic development of the country.
