As the deadline for the Philippine POGO (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators) ban approaches, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian calls on local government units to strengthen surveillance of areas where foreign nationals congregate within their jurisdictions.
He pointed out that these places could be hiding spots for illegal POGO activities, with local governments playing a crucial role in the enforcement of the ban.
Gatchalian stated that although the POGO industry has been significantly reduced under a major crackdown, some operators continue to engage in illegal activities by relocating or dispersing into smaller groups, especially in provincial areas.
This trend poses new challenges to the full implementation of the ban.
He emphasized: "Local governments must take responsibility, closely monitor activities within their jurisdictions, especially those involving foreign nationals. If officials ignore illegal POGO activities, they may face legal consequences."
Previously, the mayor of Porac, Pampanga, and ten other local officials were suspended by the Ombudsman for alleged mismanagement of POGO activities, serving as a typical case. Gatchalian reminds local officials of the importance of their duties, warning that failure to perform could lead to legal responsibilities.
He further calls for cooperation among all levels of government to ensure that all POGO activities are eradicated by 2025, noting that the effectiveness of the ban largely depends on the cooperation and proactivity of local governments.
The implementation of the POGO ban aims to combat related illegal economic activities and criminal acts, with effective intervention by local governments being a decisive factor. Gatchalian urges relevant departments to accelerate actions to achieve this goal, maintaining social order and public safety.
