Former Thai police chief faces investigation over alleged bribes from gaming operators

Nicaragua.- With the significant support of Nicaraguan athletes who won Gold Medals at the CODICADER Youth Games, El Salvador 2024, the National Lottery of Nicaragua made the profit distribution to the Ministry of the Family (MIFAN) and the Nicaraguan Institute of Sports (IND), corresponding to the month of October of this year.

In a ceremony held at the Polideportivo España, the General Manager of the National Lottery, Virginia Molina, handed over checks amounting to C$ 12,250m (USD 329,000) to the IND and another for the same amount to MIFAN for a total of C$ 24.5m (USD 659,000) directed to social programs.

In the presence of the gold medalist athletes, Molina expressed the institution's satisfaction in delivering the money. “We managed to fulfill this month's delivery, thanks mainly to the vendors who offer the different lottery products on the streets of the country bringing luck to the faithful players, to the effort also of the workers of the National Lottery and to all the Nicaraguan families who buy Ordinary Lottery, the scratch card and each of the Insta Cash games: Bowling, Tic Tac, Bingo, and Numbers on Fire,” she stated.

The general manager of the National Lottery called on the Nicaraguan people to continue having that faith, "that luck is crazy and it can happen to anyone," as part of the company's slogan, "so that (Nicaraguans) continue buying" national lottery products.

Moreover, Molina highlighted that with this tenth annual delivery, the entity has already achieved 83.33 percent of the goal set for 2024.

General Torsak Sukvimol and seven others are being investigated.

Thailand.- The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has launched an investigation into former police chief Torsak Sukvimol and seven others for allegedly taking bribes from 18 gambling websites and illegal businesses. Torsak and the others are alleged to have accepted the bribes between October 2023 and September 2024, when Torsak was serving as national police chief.

Torsak was suspended in March after conflicts with his then-deputy, Surachate, who has also been accused of taking bribes. He resumed work in June and was replaced by Kitrat Phanphet on October 1.

In totally unrelated news, police in Thailand arrested a Singaporean man for alleged involvement in a cryptocurrency scam that defrauded investors of over THB22.4m (US$657,700). According to The Straits Times, the man is suspected of being part of a group that created a fake app resembling the Tidex digital cryptocurrency trading platform and of opening digital wallets to store the proceeds from victims.
