The presidents of Loterj and Lottopar, Hazenclever Lopes Cançado and Daniel Romanowski, have sent letters to Google pressing for the Big tech to change its online betting advertisement policy. Currently, Google only accepts advertising from bets authorized to operate in the national territory by the Ministry of Finance. The policy was announced in October and implemented from January 1st.
Cançado and Romanowski, however, disagree with Google's internal policy. They demand that the platform also accept advertisements from bets authorized by them. The two sent letters to the company at the end of 2024 demanding a change.
Lottopar sent on December 16 and Loterj on December 20. Hazenclever even suggested a new wording for Google's policy in his letter. Daniel threatened to sue the company if it does not start to accept advertisements from bets authorized by them.
Lotteries may grant authorizations for bets to operate in their States. The two lotteries are public companies directly linked to local governments and their presidents are appointed by the governor.
Google claims that it does not make regional distinctions for this type of advertisement and that it reproduces in Brazil a policy similar to that adopted in other countries, of only accepting federal licenses for betting advertisements.
“Google supports responsible gambling advertising and adheres to local laws and industry standards. To comply with Brazilian legislation, we updated our gambling-related advertising policy in October. As planned, from January 1st, only advertisers certified by the Ministry of Finance and with the necessary Google Ads certification will be able to operate on our platforms,” said the big tech to Poder360.
Loterj and Lottopar were approached, but did not position themselves until the publication of this report.
