The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) of the Philippines issued a statement warning Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) to beware of illegal "third-country recruitment" scams disguised as high-paying jobs, especially the false information circulating on social media platforms.
This statement was in response to the recent arrest of a group of Filipinos in Nigeria. It is reported that these individuals were detained for alleged cybercrime, economic sabotage, and violations of immigration laws.
The Philippine Embassy in Nigeria reported that the victims were deceived through illegal recruitment channels. They traveled to Nigeria on tourist visas from Dubai, UAE, under the mistaken belief that they could legally apply for work permits upon arrival.
However, according to Nigerian law, foreign workers must apply for a Special Technical Resident (STR) visa before departure, and entering with a tourist visa seeking employment is illegal. This has led many workers to legal disputes and even forced involvement in illegal activities upon arrival.
The Philippine government urges overseas workers to process their documents through certified legal recruitment agencies to ensure labor protection and necessary emergency assistance.
DMW specifically pointed out that the so-called "third-country recruitment" often targets Filipino workers already working abroad with promises of high salaries. These recruitment practices not only violate Philippine laws but also potentially place workers in highly dangerous situations.
The Bureau of Migrant Workers urges all Filipino workers to be vigilant, reject unauthorized recruitment activities, and advises verifying the authenticity of job opportunities through official channels.
Meanwhile, the government also commits to strengthening international cooperation to combat illegal activities targeting overseas workers.
"Protecting the legal rights of overseas workers is our top priority, and we will continue to strive to provide them with a safe working environment," emphasized the DMW in the statement.
