A Chinese citizen wanted by Beijing authorities for involvement in establishing an illegal online gambling syndicate was arrested by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Vidad confirmed in a statement that the passenger, 38-year-old Huang Sen, was intercepted on January 11 at the departure area of Terminal 1 at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Vidad stated that the immigration officer handling Huang Sen's case discovered his name in the bureau's Interpol negative information system, leading to his arrest.
Vidad revealed that at the request of the Chinese government, Interpol's Beijing office issued a red notice for Huang Sen on December 4 last year, "Vidad said, adding that the fugitive was later detained at the immigration detention facility in Taguig City, awaiting deportation.
The Director of Immigration stated: "He will be deported as an undesirable foreigner and placed on our blacklist of undesirable foreigners to prevent him from re-entering."
According to Peter de Guzman, acting head of the BI's Interpol division, on August 27 last year, the Public Security Bureau of Luojiang District, Deyang City, China, issued an arrest warrant for Huang Guangyu.
De Guzman stated that the case originated from Huang Guangyu conspiring with other suspects to operate illegal gambling websites on the internet, serving global online customers.
It is reported that the gambling syndicate employed over 70,000 people, enticing more than one million Chinese customers to gamble on their websites.
It is estimated that the gambling activities managed by the syndicate involved bets exceeding 700 billion yuan, equivalent to 95 billion US dollars, with the group profiting at least 2 billion yuan, equivalent to 272 million US dollars.
The Chinese authorities have identified Huang Guangyu as the head of the gambling department of the syndicate.
