Brazil’s land-based gambling chances received a huge boost on Saturday (1 February) as gambling advocate Davi Alcolumbre was re-elected as the Senate’s president.
Alcolumbre, who previously held the role of senate president between 2019 and 2021, has been a key proponent of gambling in Brazil. As the senate rang in its 2025 legislative session on the weekend, Alcolumbre was sworn in after winning the role by a landslide vote (73 of the 81).
In his role as president of the Justice and Citizenship Committee (CCJ), he helped to progress PL 2,234/2022, a bill that has sought to legalise casinos, bingo, jogo de bicho and betting on horseracing. The bill was approved in June 2024 on a vote of 14-12, though it hasn’t yet been fully approved by the senate thanks to a number of delays.
