Will Su Qi Du still be arrested? Observing the inconsistent games behind Thailand's fight against telecom fraud.

Recently, the Thai government launched a large-scale inspection operation across the country, setting up more than 5,000 checkpoints to prevent cross-border crime and combat telecommunications fraud. Meanwhile, news from the Myawaddy area on the Thai-Myanmar border also came in, with the leader of the Border Guard Force (BGF), Suchid, announcing the deportation of Chinese people suspected of telecom fraud.

On the surface, Thailand's action seems like a "thunderous measure" to clean up illegal activities, but the political and interest games involved are far more complex than what the headlines show.

Deep Motives Behind the Inspection Operation

The large-scale inspection operation in Thailand appears to be aimed at combating telecom fraud groups, but it has a deeper purpose.

Firstly, this move by Thailand is a response to internal and external pressures. In recent years, telecom fraud groups have ravaged Southeast Asia, and Thailand, as a regional hub, has naturally become a focus. China has strengthened cross-national cooperation against telecom fraud, and Thailand's action is a direct response to China's concerns.

At the same time, the dissatisfaction among Thai citizens regarding rampant telecom fraud and police corruption is also increasing, especially since Thai citizens have also been deceived into participating in illegal activities in Myanmar. If the government does not act, it could lead to greater social discontent.

Secondly, this is also a key step for Thailand to reshape its image as a "safe tourist destination." In recent years, telecom fraud cases have had a significant impact on Thailand's tourism industry, especially the trust of Chinese tourists in Thailand. Restoring the confidence of international tourists has become an important task for the government. Therefore, eliminating illegal industries and creating a safe environment has become an inevitable path for the recovery of Thailand's tourism industry.

Moreover, this inspection operation is also closely related to the Thai government's consolidation of its governing power. Since taking office, the Peutongtan government has been promoting economic recovery and security reforms, and this "nationwide sweep" not only helps to clear internal hidden dangers but also provides an opportunity for the government to showcase its governance capabilities.

The Dilemma of Suchid

Suchid is an important leader of the Myanmar Karen Border Guard Force and also the mastermind behind telecom fraud activities in the Myawaddy area. Although Thailand's special case office had expressed intentions to arrest Suchid, their attitude has recently softened, citing "insufficient evidence." This change has led to doubts: Is Thailand really unable to arrest him?

In fact, Thailand is not "powerless" but has adopted a "long-line fishing" strategy. Suchid is facing a dilemma: on one hand, Myanmar, Thailand, and China are all intensifying their crackdown on telecom fraud parks, making him a target; on the other hand, he holds a lot of information about the whereabouts of telecom fraud personnel. The Thai government has chosen not to arrest him for now, actually hoping to use his resources to accelerate the cleanup work. By allowing him to "redeem his sins," they aim to extract more information and benefits.

However, whether this strategy can fully control the situation remains unknown. If Suchid realizes that he cannot protect himself, will he choose extreme measures? Will he flee to a third country? These questions remain unresolved.

Four-Nation Joint Action Against Telecom Fraud Groups

Thailand's actions are not limited to domestic eradication but are a key part of Southeast Asia's joint action against telecom fraud. Thailand has cut off the operation capabilities of telecom fraud bases in Myawaddy, Sihanoukville in Cambodia, and the Golden Triangle in Laos through measures such as "cutting off electricity, internet, and fuel." Currently, Thailand has cut off electricity and fuel supplies to the Myawaddy area, Cambodia is also building a 55-kilometer-long barbed wire wall, and border control in Laos and Myanmar is being strengthened.

This regional joint action means that the living space for telecom fraud groups is being significantly reduced. In the past, they could move between Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, but now, the cooperation between these countries is making their activity space increasingly narrow.

Thailand's Ultimate Goal: Eliminating Illegal Networks or Power Exchange?

On the surface, the Thai government is fully committed to combating telecom fraud, intending to completely eradicate illegal gangs. However, from a realistic perspective, whether Thailand truly wants to "catch them all" remains to be seen.

In this complex game of interests, some forces may choose to preserve parts of the telecom fraud networks, rather than completely destroy them. This is because certain "gray area" economic activities involve complex chains of political and business interests, and local governments, law enforcement departments, and even military personnel may profit from them. Therefore, whether Thailand's future actions will completely eliminate these illegal networks is still full of uncertainties.

Suchid Will Eventually Not Escape Sanctions

The answer is no. Thailand not only has the capability to arrest Suchid but will definitely take action eventually. However, the current strategy is to "let Suchid provide more clues before trapping him." As more telecom fraud personnel are deported, the Thai government will hold more bargaining chips, and Suchid's escape routes will become increasingly narrow. When the time is ripe, Thailand will have the full capability to net him and bring him to court.

The "myth" of the telecom fraud parks is coming to an end. The joint crackdown by Southeast Asian countries will leave these criminal gangs with nowhere to hide. The cooperation between Thailand, China, and ASEAN countries is destined to completely dismantle these criminal groups.
