In a significant move for the gaming and betting sector, the Loteria do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (LOTERJ) has formally requested the Núcleo de Informação e Controle do PontoBR (NIC.br), linked to the Internet Steering Committee in Brazil (CGI.br), that the secondary domain category, "bet.br", be exclusively allocated to all regulated companies in Brazil.
LOTERJ warns that the use of the "bet.br" domain by operators authorized by various regulatory bodies ensures consumers the certainty that these companies are regulated in the country. In a context where the sector faces a critical moment due to a legislative vacuum since 2018, this measure becomes indispensable to protect consumers.
Various companies that do not comply with Brazilian legislation have proliferated, making it essential to inform and educate consumers quickly and effectively. Denying the use of the "bet.br" domain to regulated companies contravenes the principles of free enterprise, free competition, and consumer protection, provided for in the Constitution, the Civil Internet Framework, and the Consumer Defense Code. Moreover, it directly violates the principle of network neutrality and democratic and collaborative governance.
In favor of consumers, LOTERJ emphasizes that the use of the "bet.br" domain should be democratized for all regulatory bodies, thus avoiding unfair privileges in the digital environment. This measure seeks to ensure equity and transparency in the sector.
