South Dakota casino revenue down 1.5% year-over-year in January

South Dakota casinos reported a combined handle of $110.8 million in January, down 1.5% percent compared to the previous year, the South Dakota Department of Revenue has reported.

The South Dakota Commission on Gaming regulates 22 commercial casinos and 13 tribal casinos. Of the combined handle, casinos produced $103.2 million via slot machines, a 2.3% year-over-year decline, and $6.5 million via table games, an 8.5% year-over-year rise. Yet spending appears to be down for all avenues month-over-month, as slot machines produced $111 million and table games $7.2 million.

Bettors also wagered $1 million on seven retail-based sportsbooks in January, up 18% compared to the previous year. Last month, the NFL was the favorite among bettors, generating a handle of $478,879, followed by NCAA men’s basketball, which produced $246,361, and NCAA football, which generated $169,886 in wagers.
