Last Sunday at dawn, a street gambling event in Quezon City, Philippines, was raided by the police. Three men were arrested for participating in illegal gambling, and the discovery of a homemade "pen gun" during the search added a dangerous twist to what was initially a routine public security case, raising community concerns about the safety hazards of street illegal activities.

Residents report, police raid at night

The incident occurred in the early hours of January 12th, on Kaliraya Street in the Tatalon area of Quezon City. A vigilant resident noticed people gathering for gambling on the street and, sensing something amiss, immediately called the police. Officers from the Galas Police Station quickly responded and arrived at the scene, confirming that three men were playing a street gambling game called "kara y krus" (heads or tails). The police immediately detained the three individuals, aged 37, 23, and a young man of only 19 years old.

Small gambling hides big risks: "Pen gun" found

Initially, it seemed to be just a typical case of illegal gambling. However, during the search of the suspects, the police found a modified simple firearm, commonly known as a "pen gun," on one of the 37-year-old men. Since the incident occurred in a residential area during the late hours, this discovery immediately heightened police alertness, and the firearm was confiscated on the spot. The suspect claimed that he carried the gun for "self-defense."

When questioned by the police, the three men gave different statements:

The 37-year-old suspect admitted the gun was his.

The 23-year-old man claimed he was just passing by and joined the gambling on a whim.

The 19-year-old youth denied participating in the gambling, arguing he was "just there."

Prior records investigation and potential risks

As the investigation deepened, the police discovered that the 23-year-old suspect had a criminal history, having previously been imprisoned for robbery and illegal possession of firearms. This background information, combined with the firearms found at the scene, led the police to assess whether the three men might be linked to certain criminal gangs. This possibility could not be easily dismissed under the current evidence.

Charges faced and case progress

Currently, the three suspects are detained at the Galas Police Station, all facing charges of illegal gambling. Moreover, the 37-year-old man who possessed the "pen gun" will also be prosecuted for illegal possession of firearms. The case is still under further investigation to clarify all details and potential networks.

This incident also reminds the public that street illegal gambling is not only a violation of the law but may also become a breeding ground for other serious crimes.
