The Premier League's official partner Sorare has been accused by the UK Gambling Commission of providing unlicensed gambling services to UK consumers.
The charges stem from an investigation launched by the Commission in October 2021, which, if proven, could lead to hefty fines or even imprisonment.
Despite the investigation, Sorare still managed to secure a four-year partnership deal with the Premier League in January 2023. As part of the agreement, Sorare launched a free version of its fantasy football game.
Premier League officials stated that thorough due diligence was conducted before finalizing the deal. However, these charges now might cast doubt on the decision to partner with Sorare.
At the time the partnership was first announced, the Football Supporters' Association expressed concerns about the increasing involvement of cryptocurrencies in football, stating: "Supporters have repeatedly expressed concerns about the surge in cryptocurrency partnerships in the game, and the Premier League's statement is no exception.
"Cryptographic assets are currently under-regulated, and there is a lack of protection for consumers purchasing them. Clubs, leagues, and players promoting such schemes often do not conduct the necessary due diligence, putting their fans at financial risk.
"We will continue to work with the government, parliament, and other relevant parties to provide better protection for football supporters."
Sorare has also established partnerships with several major European football leagues, club teams, and national teams, and the company strongly denies these allegations.
The company spokesperson stated: "We firmly deny any claims that Sorare is a gambling product under UK law.
"The Commission has misunderstood our business and wrongly determined that the Gambling Act applies to Sorare. We cannot comment further while legal proceedings are ongoing."
