The complexity and darkness of the telecommunications fraud parks in Southeast Asia are staggering, especially those from Myawaddy to the Myanmar-Thailand border, scattered across mountains and borders, becoming a "crime depression".

According to incomplete statistics, the main telecommunications fraud parks in Myanmar are concentrated in the following areas:

Myawaddy: Located on the Myanmar-Thailand border, it has attracted attention in recent years due to frequent telecommunications fraud activities. It is reported that there are hundreds of scam parks in the Myawaddy area alone.

Wa State: Located in northern Myanmar, bordering China, it is considered one of the most severe areas for telecommunications fraud in Myanmar. The area is controlled by local armed forces, with limited influence from the central government.

Eastern Shan State: Includes places like Mong La, which has long been a hotbed for various illegal activities, including rampant telecommunications fraud.

According to statistics, there are over 1,000 telecom fraud parks in Myanmar, with hundreds in the Myawaddy area alone, and more than 100,000 people engaged in telecommunications fraud activities every day. These parks are mostly surrounded by high walls and equipped with strict management systems, forming a separate small society.

The breeding of this crime model is closely related to Myanmar's complex political situation. Local armed separatism and limited central government control over remote areas make places like Myawaddy a "safe haven" for criminals. Moreover, the remote geographical location and mountainous terrain provide a natural barrier for illegal activities.

Furthermore, some local armed forces collude with telecom fraud groups, and some can even find high-ranking government military officials as "protective umbrellas", making cross-border law enforcement extremely difficult.

The Chain Reaction of the Wang Xing Incident

Against this backdrop, the exposure of the Wang Xing incident undoubtedly acted as a catalyst, prompting the Thai government to adopt a clearer stance on telecom fraud. From the initial social media pleas for help to the Thai police confirming Wang Xing as a victim of human trafficking, to "Myawaddy" becoming a focal point in public discourse, public outrage and attention have driven widespread discussion of this issue. Myawaddy has become not only a hotspot for human trafficking and telecommunications fraud but also a typical case of transnational crime.

Thailand, as a neighbor of Myanmar, has long adopted a "watch from the other side" attitude towards telecom fraud activities. However, as the incident fermented, the Thai government had to face the threat of telecom fraud parks, gradually strengthening cooperation with China and Myanmar to promote the rectification of border areas.

Prime Minister Scammed, Decisively Cuts Off Internet

The rampant telecom fraud activities even almost tricked Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Srettha stated that she recently received a scam call, where the caller used AI technology to imitate the voice of a foreign leader. The voice was so realistic, and through editing and dialogue, it created a very convincing call atmosphere. Moreover, the displayed number looked completely normal.

She recalled that when she answered the phone, the caller started with "Good morning, Prime Minister of Thailand," in a very friendly tone. The conversation that followed sounded just like that foreign leader. During the conversation, the caller suddenly mentioned a donation project, saying she hadn't donated yet, and then sent a link, hoping she would donate through this link. Strangely, this link did not lead to a Thai page, but to a donation website of another country.

Srettha said that because the voice was so similar, she almost believed it. The caller even specifically called again at 11 pm, and when she woke up in the morning and saw the message, she specifically replied to the caller to apologize and scheduled the next call time. Later, the caller sent a fundraising video. Upon closer inspection, the transfer account did not match the mentioned country, which made her suspicious.

She immediately contacted the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society, who helped her check, and it was confirmed that this was a carefully designed scam call.

At that moment, it was hard to say whether the scammers were audacious or just desperate for fame, to even impersonate a government official to scam the Prime Minister of Thailand!

It's probably something the Thai Prime Minister never expected to experience herself!

After the news spread, Thai society was in an uproar. This was not only a challenge to the Thai law enforcement system but also gave the international community a more direct understanding of the rampant extent of telecom fraud parks.

Against this backdrop, the Thai government quickly took action.

The Department of Technology Crime Suppression stated that the telecom fraud gangs have bases in neighboring countries, scanning mobile signals to find scam targets, and then searching online for victims' information to carry out scams.

Currently, the Department of Technology Crime Suppression has cooperated with multiple departments to cut off the communication signals of neighboring country telecom fraud gangs.

However, the frequent replacement of equipment by the scammers poses significant challenges to the signal cutting efforts.

This decisive action shows the Thai government's firm stance against telecom fraud parks and sets a positive example for international efforts to combat telecom fraud activities.

Thailand's Next Step: Eradicating Telecom Fraud Forces?

Cutting off the internet is just the first step; how to completely eradicate the power of telecom fraud parks remains a complex issue. From the current situation, Thailand may take the following measures:

Strengthening international cooperation: Continue to deepen law enforcement cooperation with China and Myanmar, through intelligence sharing and joint actions, to cut off the financial and manpower chains of telecom fraud activities.

Border control upgrades: Deploy more resources at the Myanmar-Thailand border, enhance the construction of checkpoints, and block the flow of illegal personnel and funds.

Cleaning up the interest chain: Focus on cracking down on local armed forces and corrupt officials colluding with telecom fraud parks, cutting off their "protective umbrellas" behind the scenes.

Technical means to block: Use network technology to monitor and track the communication equipment and network activities of telecom fraud groups, curbing scam activities from the source.

However, easier said than done! This involves not only governments but also various civilian powers and gang forces! It's not just that Myanmar's telecom fraud parks have ties with local armed forces, even the gang forces in the parks are not all the same!

Conclusion

The scam incident involving the Thai Prime Minister has sounded an alarm for the government and has become an opportunity to rectify telecom fraud parks.

Through this incident, Srettha probably also realized the terrifying development of telecom fraud! The scammers not only knew her information in detail but also used AI technology to completely fool her! The face of a nation's Prime Minister was almost lost!

The internet cut-off action showed Thailand's determination, but to completely eradicate this stubborn problem, international cooperation and comprehensive measures are still needed. However, given the current high density of domestic reports on telecom fraud, that day should not be far away!
