The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) of the Philippines announced that it monitors over 2 million cyber threats daily and confirmed that "ongoing" cyber attacks are targeting various offices under multiple administrative departments. In this context, how to guard against cyber scams and hacking attacks has become a focal point of public concern.

During the "Safe Internet Day" celebration in 2025, Norman Ng, the Global Head of Trust and Safety for Google Asia Pacific, provided a series of practical tips for online account protection to the general public. Here are some key points on how users can avoid falling into the traps of cyber scammers:

1. Carefully check the source of links

Ng emphasized that when clicking on seemingly legitimate links, users need to carefully examine the source and details of the links. He reminded, "Scammers have become very skilled at making fake websites look like real ones, so we must be careful to check every detail."

2. Be cautious about downloading apps from unofficial channels

Ng pointed out that although downloading apps from outside Google Play might be tempting, these apps could hide malware that steals user information. He advised users to pay attention to the app's ratings, download counts, and the reputation of the developers, ensuring the app permissions are reasonable.

3. Avoid storing passwords in note-taking apps

Ng warned users not to store passwords in the note-taking apps on their phones, as all passwords could be exposed if the phone is lost. He recommended using a password manager app, such as Google Password Manager, which encrypts passwords with two-step verification and biometric features.

4. Screen group chat members

In group chats, if inactive members are found, Ng suggested promptly removing them. He explained, "If one member of the group chat is attacked or hacked, all members of the group chat could be affected."

This video was produced in collaboration with TikTok educational creator Lyka Marvilla by Google, aiming to raise internet users' security awareness through education. Google had also previously collaborated with the local band Ben&Ben to promote cybersecurity knowledge, helping Filipino users better cope with cyber risks.
