In the second quarter of 2024, the online platform revenue of the Portuguese gambling market improved, but the revenue from physical operations declined compared to the same period last year.
The national gambling regulatory authority, Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos, reported that the total online revenue generated by 17 licensed online operators grew by 27.1% year-over-year, reaching 261.8 million euros (Q2 2023: 205.9 million euros).
SRIJ stated that of the total online revenue, 60.5% came from games of chance operations, while 39.5% came from online sports betting.
At the end of this quarter, the revenue from games of chance was 158.5 million euros, up 29.9% year-over-year (2023: 122 million euros), with betting amounts totaling 4.37 billion euros (2023: 3.24 billion euros).
In the second quarter, slot machines accounted for the largest share in games of chance betting, at 82.3%, followed by French roulette, blackjack, dice games, and poker.
Meanwhile, sports betting revenue grew by 23.1% to 103.3 million euros (2023: 84 million euros), with betting amounts totaling 462.3 million euros (2023: 357.6 million euros).
During this period, football betting accounted for the largest share of sports betting, at 69.3%, followed by tennis, basketball, and other sports.
SRIJ noted that the total number of players with 17 licensed online operators grew by 16.2% year-over-year, reaching 4.4 million, an increase of 3.5% compared to the previous quarter.
New registrations grew by 51.2% year-over-year, reaching 287,600, while the number of self-exclusions grew by 41.5% compared to Q2 2023, reaching 256,900.
As for land-based operations, SRIJ reported that revenue fell by 4.5% year-over-year to 63.7 million euros (2023: 66.8 million euros), but grew by 1.3% compared to the previous quarter.
By game type, slot machines accounted for 78.41% of total physical gambling revenue this quarter, with other casino games making up the remaining 21.59%. Roulette was the largest among these other casino games, at 36.5%, followed by baccarat, dice games, blackjack, and poker.
